Understanding success

Success, in this context is more than mere accumulation of grades in classroom activities.

A student who only thinks of passing his course with good grades, attaining a first class and securing a reputable certificate and testimonial is not successful.

Come with me thoughtfully, let me take you on a journey into the heart of life. Let's enter in - with understanding - into the inner circle of life, where value is placed not on positions achieved, as this is not enduring. Not on the acquisition of material possessions, certificates and awards, as all these in themselves are vain and does not improve the society. Not  on praises and your reputation before men as all these are superficial, and can be wiped out by the flood of any error you commit before the men you please.

A successful student is the one, which by learning, has come into fellowship with knowledge. By comprehension, thoughts of understanding and memory are built. Which also by his awareness and learning of life and spiritual knowledge, stability of character is built, and life experiences then becomes the platform of which he improves his skills and sharpens his wisdom and insight.

At this point, I can convince you, that the success, therefore of a student is determined by what he becomes or is becoming. It's a matter of character developed and wisdom attain that proves to be indicators of a student success.

Indicators of success

As established earlier, we know that the succes a student achieves is actually who or what he has become or is becoming. Therefore let's dive into the elaboration of this indicators.

Attitude - stature of the mind

Intentionality:

It's an obvious and widely accepted fact that, for a man to live, he has to be deliberate. A student who aims at becoming a value to his soceity and neighbour, has to be intentional about his learning. Much of what is learnt in school is used for examination and then forgotten, what is really used for success is what is deliberately learnt out of interest or intent. A student therefore, by will must choose to learn and not to be drag through college, just trying to follow an educational system's scheme to justify his career pursuit.

Judgement

A student who aims at success must be able to attain a level of stability for wise judgement. Without which confusion sets in. Therefore, a student's emotional stability can't be overemphasize. Qualities that makes up for good judgement are - prudence, self control, courage and justice.

Character

Concentration:

Any successfull student must develop a strong character required for stern concentration to the work at hand. He must not indulge in sidetracking events because millions of thing going around us seeks our attention. The student tending towards success must have the courage, must have built the fortitude and peserverance to overcome temptations by will power. Concentration, leads the thoughts to understand accurate details of the process or course of study. He can only penetrate the depth by grasping the knowledge of the underlying concepts of what he is currently studying. Therefore, with a stonger cultivation of concentration in ones work, the student attains accurate and precise knowledge of principles and ultimate causes behind distincts effects and outcome. With depth of concentration, he becomes a genius and master of whatever field he fixed his thought on. He becomes skillful and wiser as he grows in character and self control. By this, he becomes a man of great value for he commands influence among the dwellings of men.

Dauntlessness and steadfastness:

A student who wants to be great must also develop great moral strength. He must be fearless, dauntless and also steadfast to his course; not bending to the whims and caprices of his emotions, longings and desires; not yielding to the opinion of men; not moved by flatteries and the praises of men. He must have the  fortitude to shake off as dust, all that men mounts on him as pressures. By his will power, he must peservere in the midst of vicissitudes and must gain stamina and endurance to face challenges soberly, thoughtfully and patiently, when the days becomes dark. For it is said " faithless is he that says farewell when the road becomes dark"

" Have you missed in your aim?  well, the mark is still shining.

Did you faint in the race?  Well, take breath for the next."

         Ella Wheelar Wilcox.

On other virtues:

A great student must grow in knowledge of virtues, as this are his true values and assets of which he can always count or lean back on. Virtues are rewarding and when they are formely established in the mind of a student, it's fruits flourishes and it's seen by his neighbours for you cannot light a candle and hide is under a cloack, it must burn the cloack and manifest that the world will see. Therefore virtues are rewarding and when dutifully learned and thoughtfully applied by wisdom, the true creative power of the mind unlocks when faced with real life situations. For such a man of virtue will learn to handle situations wisely, learns to carry and drop a thing appropriately. He becomes productive and creative in times of need, times when the genius within calls for manifestation.

This virtues includes: patience, love, sincerity, honesty, simplicity, kindness, courage, condfidence and rectitude.

With such virtues, the student becomes distinct in his way of life and seen by others as a great personality among men.

Of creativity and productivity.

A creative mind is a mind free from anxiety and worries about outcomes and performances. A student's mind is not yet creative if he is not yet sincere and simple. Only in this state can his mind contact creative imaginations and whispers.

A creative student does much intellecting in silentness and solitude. For only a quiet mind perceives knowledge and inspirations.

While immersed in his thought, the great student  meddles with many things in his mind, combining concepts, selecting, adding and subtracting, and reasoning with the knowledge of established principles in mind and finally  brings into reality, an invention, a business concept and model, an industry, therefore opening grounds for diverse opportunities in the society.

When all is said and done, the success of a student is not judged by his mere performances and results as it's said " examination is not the true test of knowledge". But a successfull student is made inside out, for he has to first become, and grows; then afterwards, manifests the glory within.

For student development, "The mastery of destiny". A book written by James Allen is highly recommended.
